Fergus was educated in Castleknock College and Trinity College Dublin and qualified in Medicine in 1985. He completed his medical and surgical Internship in The Meath Hospital. His speciality GP residency was with the Dublin GP Training Scheme. He completed rotations in Emergency Medicine and General Internal Medicine at St. Vincent’s University Hospital; Paediatrics at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin and Obstetrics & Gynecology at The Coombe Women’s Hospital.
He completed his GP Registrar / Trainee year with The Sheehan Practice in Glasthule.
He departed for Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in 1989. He was a GP partner in a family practice in Port McNeill and Clinical Tutor with the Department of Family Practice at University of British Columbia, Vancouver. This post included much Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics. He was also chairman of the local district hospital.
Fergus has done extra training in Sports Medicine, Women’s Health, Psychological Medicine, Paediatrics and Geriatric Medicine. He returned briefly in 1992 to the Johnstown Medical Centre as a locum while his father Dr. John Mason was unwell, before returning in 1993 after the death of Dr Dermot O’Brien, to begin as a partner.
He is actively involved in GP medical training and is a Postgraduate GP Trainer with the Trinity College/ HSE GP Training scheme. He also has been an undergraduate GP Tutor with the Trinity College Medical School. He was involved as a National GP IT Tutor to help other GP practices efficiently use Electronic Health Records and the Internet.
He is an active member of the local medical continuing medical education network in Dun Laoghaire with the Irish College of General Practitioners.
Fergus is married with 3 children. He is interested in sports and sail racing in Dublin Bay.
