Dr. Joan Macken

Dr. Joan Macken

Graduated from University College Dublin MB. BCH.BAO. 1978 Diploma in Child Health 1979 Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology 1979 Diploma in Anaesthesia 1981 Membership of Royal College of General Practitioners 1982.

A graduate of UCD, Joan completed her Intern year at St. Vincent’s Hospital, followed by S.H.O rotations in Our Lady's Children’s Hospital, Crumlin and the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street.

She then moved to the UK where she worked as a registrar in Anaesthesia at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle on Tyne for fifteen months, working in General Dental and Obstetrical Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine before switching to General Practice training with rotations in General Medicine and Psychiatry.

Her final year as a GP trainee was spent in Kew, London.

In 1983, Joan moved to McGill University, Montreal where she spent two years as Assistant Professor of General Practice. Returning to London in 1985 she divided her time between General Practice and her role as editor of Medicine International, the journal format of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine.

She returned to Ireland in 1987 and started in practice at the Johnstown Medical Centre. Joan is active in continuing medical education with the Dun Laoghaire Faculty of the Irish College of General Practitioners.

Joan is married with 2 children.
